R4 broadcasting on all channels including long wave is one of the indicators for nuclear submarine commanders that the UK has not fallen.
If the shipping forecast fails then the UK has fallen and sub commanders are instructed to:
A) Fire all weapons indiscriminately
B) Fire weapons at last commanded target
C) Make the vessel and crew available to allied navies. The United States it still exists.
D) Go to Australia
It is code.

I almost always have R4 on overnight and if I'm having trouble getting to sleep, the Shipping Forecast at roughly 0045 almost always sends me to sleep.

Understand about as much of it as I do the Googly, Flipper and Wrongun - but love to listen to both
